Qingdao is a famous state-listed historical and cultural coastal open city, and a world-renowned tourist resort, being of great economic importance. Five county-level cities and seven districts, with a total area of 10,654 square km and a combined population of 7.03 million are administered by the city.
Since China launched its opening up reform, Qingdao has witnessed rapid economic development, significant increases in its comprehensive might, constant expansion of international exchanges, fundamental changes in its outlook and significant improvement in living standards. Qingdao, on the coast of Yellow Sea, lies in the southern tip of Shandong Peninsula (at 35°35'N ~ 37°09'N and 119°30'E ~ 121°00'E). Sitting with the mountains behind and facing the sea, Qingdao is a unique city, noted for its beautiful scenery and pleasant climate. It has a coastline of 870 kilometers (including the coastlines of islands in its jurisdiction), of which the continental coastline totals 730 kilometers or one-fourth of the total coastline of Shandong Province. The coastline is twisted and dotted with a vast number of capes and bays.
Qingdao is comprises of seven districts and five cities in its jurisdiction, with a total area of 10,654 square kilometers and a total population of 7.312 million. The urban area totals 1,159 square kilometers and the urban population is 2.584 million.
From being situated in a place in the north temperate monsoon region, Qingdao has a temperate monsoon climate. The urban areas have the distinctive features of a marine climate due to the direct regulation of the marine environment and the effect of the southeast monsoon, ocean current and also water mass. With humid air and mild temperatures, Qingdao has four distinctive seasons. In spring, the temperature picks up slowly, usually one month later than in inland. Summer is humid, rainy and hot, but not scorching. In autumn, the sky is clear and the air is crisp, with little rainfall. Winter is not frigid, despite prolonged strong winds and low temperatures.
As a host city for the sailing event of the 2008 Olympic Games, Qingdao has already began planning for this event and also undertaken many projects to further improve its ecological environment. Highlighting the theme of “New Qingdao, Great Olympics”, the city will try to stage a “unique and high-standard” sailing event in line with the concepts of the “Green Olympics, High-tech Olympics and People’s Olympics”. Taking advantage of its mountainous, sea and city views, Qingdao will do all it can to build a base for water sports, being of a first rate standard not only in Asia but also in the world. With the “Sea Olympics” as the carrier, Qingdao will strive to become China's “capital of sailing”.
Before June 2003, the following items have been set to be achieved. The planning for the Qingdao International Sailing Center, the relocation of Beihai Ship Building Plant, preparations for the Construction of the Center and the construction of relevant infrastructure. Before June 2006, the construction Qingdao International Sailing Center and its indispensable facilities should be completed, and the overall construction of the urban infrastructure is due to begin. Before June 2008, various different constructions are due to be completed, for example the facilities for the sailing events of the 2008 Olympic Games, meeting the high standards set by the Olympic committee, as well as hosting some warm-up sailing events. From July to December 2008, the sailing center will host the sailing event of the 29th Olympic Games and the 12th Paralympic Games. |

The 2008 Qingdao Olympic Sailing Centre is located on the coast of Fushan Bay, a political, cultural, commercial center in the New District east of Qingdao. The onshore planning area is approximately 45 hectares. Projects planned include China National Sailing and Surfing Training Base, the Olympic Village, Athletes Center, the Sailing Boat Parking Area, Media Center, International Luxury Cruise Ship Port, International Conference Center, International Five-star Tourist and Recreation Hotel, International Yacht Club, Seaside Tourist Recreation Center and Park and also a square. The project when completed will be a comprehensive water sports center combined with tourist, fitness, recreation, and other sea sports facilities combined with entertainment areas to form a distinctive complex.
